ER Advisor / People Advisor / Employee Relations Specialist

An exciting opportunity is now available for a proactive and commercial ER advisor to join an excellent team and business bustling with nearly 4,000 colleagues in 530 locations across the UK, Isle of Man and Republic of Ireland.

Reporting to the Senior People Partner for Retail and Relations, James Bullock, and based within our Store Support Centre, although hybrid working will be considered. You will be the first point of contact within the organisation for all Employee Relations matters for our Retail, Supply Chain and Store Support Centre. This is a demanding role within a high volume, fast paced environment supporting the UK, Isle of Man and Republic of Ireland. You will provide a full ER case management service, giving first line advice on informal and formal cases, whilst offering guidance and support to all Colleagues in line with the Company Policy and up to date and current employment legislation.

About the Role


Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Provide advice to Line Managers over the telephone, email and occasionally in person for all employee relations issues, including disciplinary, grievance, capability, absence management (both long term and short term), transformational change programmes, whistleblowing, ET’s and Subject Access Requests.
  • Manage and implement transformational change programmes such as restructures, redundancy, exits and redeployments in partnership with the People Partnering team. Ensuring ER advice is consistent and based on current policy, procedures and legislation
  • Support line managers with ER admin and case preparation from end to end. Ensuring all associated documentation is accurately prepared and supplied to Managers to support effective management of ER cases. Support also with formal outcomes to ensure appropriate resolution; ensuring any actions requiring following up are done so within company policy and legislation.
  • Develop effective relationships across the business with Key Stakeholders to promote good employee relations and ensure the credibility of the ER team.
  • Maintain our central ER database to ensure that key stakeholders receive an aligned consistent approach minimising risk
  • Effectively prioritise and case manage a high volume of various types of ER queries/cases and outcomes consistently
  • Liaise with our Company Solicitors, Employment Tribunal offices, ACAS, managers, employee representatives about ongoing cases where appropriate and escalate high risk cases to the Senior People Partner and relevant People Partner.
  • Work in partnership with our company solicitors to identifying trends, learning from ER cases and pro-actively develop and update policies, procedures, templates and guides to ensure effective people management in line with our Policies and employment legislation
  • Working closely with managers to coach and develop capability to enable them to effectively manage future ER cases, whilst enhancing their knowledge on all areas of HR Policy, procedure and practice
  • Provide insightful reports and accurate trend data to the Senior People Partner for all ER case management as required
  • Identify trends and opportunities to improve our policies, systems and processes and as a team in order to ensure that we make improvements and continuously develop
  • Keep up to date with current and future employment legislation, adapt where needed and communicate updates where needed
  • Draft and implement new/review existing policies, procedures, templates and guides for all business areas.
  • Liaise with payroll to ensure timely payment of any necessary one-off payments within the Colleague lifecycle
  • Produce standard letter templates in line with updated/new policies and procedures

About You

To be awesome in the role you will need to:

  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be able to communicate effectively at all levels within our business. Whilst creating a positive impact with credibility within the business and external partners.
  • Have proven relationship building skills with the ability to influence and negotiate effectively across all levels of the business.
  • Be commercial in your approach, with a good understanding of how business operates and is inquisitive and interested to establish how you can add value to all business areas.
  • Be able to juggle and prioritise you workload against competing demands., you’ll need to be structured and organised
  • Be innovative and forward thinking about streamlining processes for ultimate efficiency both internally and externally
  • Be able to influence and challenge thinking to ensure the right decision is made for both the colleague and business.
  • Be an excellent problem solver, with ability to question empathetically to establish the root cause and identify correct solutions
  • Love the detail, be logical and methodical in your analysis of information to draw accurate and considered conclusions before making informed decisions.
  • Make the right call, through considering all of the appropriate factors when deciding a course of action. Being able to quickly assess the credibility of information available on which to base decisions and consider the impact of any decisions.
  • Be a Microsoft office whiz – with a great understanding of Word and Excel, and a good level of knowledge with Powerpoint.
